Our town. Our parks. Our future.

Parks are powerful. They are essential infrastructure to all thriving communities, including ours.

We find ourselves amid an unprecedented groundswell of renewed support for parks and public spaces, both in Cumberland and across the nation. We believe in the power of our parks to transform our community, and that our parks, trails, and greenways are more than amenities. They define us.

What is a parks master plan?

A parks and recreation system master plan is a guiding document that seeks to evaluate, analyze, and strategically plan the long-term development of the Town’s parks and recreation system to ensure that it is meeting the identified goals and objectives of the Town, and is providing equitable, sufficient, and efficient services to its residents.

Why is it important?

Parks are a central component of the Town’s public realm; an interconnected network of public spaces which link together Cumberland’s neighborhoods, destinations, and commercial districts.  A well-designed and managed public realm, complete with networks of streetscapes, parks, trails, public places, and natural areas, serves as the framework for a communities quality of life and economic vitality.

Planning process

The approach being utilized to develop this master plan is both collaborative and linear in nature, beginning with discovery and visioning at the macro-level, which will ultimately inform the site and program-specific recommendations at the micro-level. We are working intentionally and diligently to build consensus amongst the project stakeholders and the community by incorporating multiple engagement points in each key phase of the project.  We encourage you to get involved!

“If we had a medicine that delivered as many benefits as parks, we would all be taking it.”
